‘The Art (& Science) of Healthy Ageing’

by C.A. Bryson

In 2019, I read the New York Times ‘How to Age Well Guide’. You can find it at:

This guide includes sections on:

  • Eating well
  • Movement
  • Connecting
  • Living well

Now I have another one for you—one I discovered lately. This is the ‘Healthy Ageing Quiz’, produced by the Australian government in 2010 (Department of Health and Aging). It’s designed for people over the age of 50 and takes about 20 minutes to complete.

The quiz is described as:

‘A quick and easy check-up to identify the areas of your health that need improving and provide you with practical tips on ageing well.’

The quiz will help you with:

  • Healthy ageing and lifestyle choices
  • Areas of health that are being promoted and/or neglected
  • Decrease chances of developing chronic illnesses
  • How to make informed decisions on lifestyle behaviours

I took the quiz recently and found it illuminating. Everyone is different—but this quiz may help. That said, it’s also healthy to occasionally take a mini break from life and indulge, such as how recently I hopped off the bus and dashed into an ice cream parlour for a butter pecan cone, and enjoyed it sitting in an Adirondack chair in the shade, overlooking the waterfront. Savouring the bittersweet taste of summer’s end, for a bit of childhood nostalgia (I remember with fondness, those trips to the Dairy Queen on the way home from the cottage, which we used to call the ‘sugar shack’ because it was for producing maple syrup originally.)

Here’s where you can access the quiz:

May your last days of summer ’21 be especially sweet.
